How Sea Ice Drift Influences Sea Ice Area and Volume

Equatorward sea ice drift can have competing impacts on the cover. On one hand, as reaches warmer waters it will be subject to faster melt. other near pole thin, causing growth when air temperatures are below freezing. This prompts fundamental question whether equatorward motion increases or decreases area and volume? We investigate this using an idealized climate model with a representation of thermodynamic processes specified drift. find that leads consistent loss volume. The impact depends seasonal factors background climate: When there is enough ice, slightly expands area. For thinner however, during melt season create polynyas cause substantial persists throughout year.
